 What is ATEX and Why Does It Matter?

"ATEX" is an acronym derived from the French term "ATmosphères EXplosibles" and refers to two primary EU directives:

1.  ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU : This directive applies to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. It covers the design, production, and sale of explosion-proof products within the EU and requires them to bear the "CE" and "Ex" marks, signifying compliance.

2.  ATEX Directive 99/92/EC : This directive focuses on the safety and health of workers exposed to explosive atmospheres. It requires employers to assess risk areas and ensure appropriate safety measures, protecting employees from explosion risks in the workplace.


 Equipment Classification for Explosion-Proof Products

Under ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, products are classified into categories that determine where and how they can be used:

  •  Category 1 : Designed for use in areas where explosive atmospheres are present continuously or frequently (Zone 0 for gases and Zone 20 for dust).

  •  Category 2 : Suitable for areas where explosive atmospheres are likely during regular operation (Zone 1 for gases and Zone 21 for dust).

  •  Category 3 : For use in areas where explosive atmospheres are unlikely or may only occur for short periods (Zone 2 for gases and Zone 22 for dust).

Each category demands different levels of protection and testing, ensuring that equipment is fit for its specific environment.


 The Compliance and Certification Process

To comply with ATEX 2014/34/EU, products must meet stringent safety requirements. This process includes risk assessment, design verification, and testing to ensure that the equipment will not become an ignition source. For Category 1 and Category 2 products, a third-party "notified body" must certify compliance, while manufacturers can self-certify for Category 3 equipment. Certified products are marked with the "Ex" symbol and classification details, informing users of their suitability for specific hazardous zones.
